  • Tribute: Barry Cox

    Professor Barry Cox DSc FRPharmS FBPhS graduated with a BSc (first class honours) in pharmacy, with a special option in pharmacology, from the University of Manchester in 1961. In 1963, he was awarded an MSc in pharmacology by the University of Manchester and, in 1968, he was awarded a PhD by the same university.

  • Deaths: Barry Cox

    On 12 July 2018, Barry Cox, aged 80 years, of Prestbury, Cheshire. Professor Cox registered with the Society in 1963 and was conferred Fellowship in 1988. He became a member of the Society’s Science Committee in 1982, and in 1989 he chaired the British Pharmaceutical Conference.

  • Tribute: Alan Webb

    I first met Alan Webb when I moved to Scotland in 1978, and we have been friends ever since. Alan registered with the Pharmaceutical Society in 1964, having studied at Sunderland. He worked for Pfizer in Ramsgate until 1966, when he returned to his native North East to take up a post with Winthrop Laboratories. In 1973 he went to work as a hospital pharmacist in North Shields.

    On 14 October 2018, Alan Webb, aged 76 years, of Stirling. Mr Webb registered with the Society in 1964.

  • Call for grant applications: Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship

    Funding has been made available from the Department of Health and Social Care, through the Fleming Fund, to support implementation of antimicrobial stewardship activities in four low or middle-income commonwealth countries: Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

  • Tribute: Constance 'Connie' Ashcroft

    Constance ‘Connie’ Ashcroft, who passed away on 30 September 2018, graduated from London University in 1954 and returned to her home in Manchester for postgraduate training at the Royal Infirmary. She remained there in several capacities until she was appointed district pharmaceutical officer for Staffordshire in 1974.     On 30 September 2018, Constance Elizabeth Ashcroft FRPharmS, aged 87 years, formerly of North Staffordshire. Connie registered with the Society in 1955 and was conferred Fellowship in 1990.

    On 4 October 2018, Elizabeth Standen MRPharmS, aged 75 years, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire. Mrs Standen registered with the Society in 1965.

  • Deaths: Neville Wakeford

    On 7 October 2018, Neville Wakeford MRPharmS, aged 86 years, of Oxted, Surrey. Mr Wakeford registered with the Society in 1954. In 1957 he became managing director of Kingswood Chemists, and was a past chair of the Croydon branch of the then Pharmaceutical Society.

    On 21 September 2018, John Whalley MRPharmS, aged 87 years, of Stoke-on-Trent. Mr Whalley registered with the Society in 1958.

    On 27 April 2018, Dennis Trist MRPharmS, aged 87, of Wellington, Somerset. Mr Trist registered with the Society in 1953.

  • Deaths: James Buchanan

    On 13 September 2018, James Buchanan MRPharmS, aged 82 years, of Basingstoke. Mr Buchanan registered with the Society in 1958. Mr Buchanan was a former non-executive director of the Unichem board.

  • Deaths: James Longstaff

    On 22 September 2018, James Longstaff MRPharmS, aged 93 years, of Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. Mr Longstaff registered with the Society in 1947.

  • Deaths: Gordon Minto Hourston

    On 18 September 2018, Sir Gordon Minto Hourston FRPharmS, aged 84 years, of Ballater, Aberdeenshire. Sir Gordon registered with the Society in 1957. In 1958 he joined Boots, rising to become director of retail staff in 1978. In 1981 he was appointed to the company’s main board as director of staff, and from 1988 until his retirement in 1995, he was Boots’s chair and managing director. Between 1991 and 1995, he was also director of the Company Chemists’ Association.

  • Deaths: Barbara Jean Maude

    On 19 September 2018, Barbara Jean Maude, aged 89 years, of Nuneaton. A former member of the SalvaDore, Mrs Maude began her career at Boots in Piccadilly Circus, central London, where she met her husband Cyril. The couple later moved to Nuneaton where Mrs Maude worked as a locum pharmacist. She chaired the RPS Coventry and Warwickshire Branch, and in 2002 received a certificate from the RPS recognising her long service to the branch committee. She was also a former ...

    Barbara Maude, a stalwart of the SalvaDore (RPS) and the National Association of Women Pharmacists (NAWP), has died aged 89 years.

    Graham was a man of vision with the ability to communicate and implement many of his ideas. I first met him in 1975, when he was deputy chief pharmacist in London and on the appointment panel for a new regional drug information role in the South West. He took great interest in the development of the then UK-wide drug information network, as he saw it as crucial to developing the pharmacist clinical role outside the dispensary.     Standing on the shoulders of giants is a well known concept when discussing the advancement of professional services through building on the pioneering work of others. Sadly one of the giants of pharmacy, Graham Calder, died on 28 August 2018.

    On 25 August 2018, Adrian Thomas FRPharmS, aged 77 years, of Comberton, Cambridgeshire. Dr Thomas registered with the Society in 1964 and was conferred Fellowship in 2010.

    I first knew of Graham as the former Scottish government chief pharmaceutical officer and then as the chair of Post Qualification Education Board (PQEB) for Scotland.     It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Alan Vickers. John Alan Vickers was born on 20 November 1928 in Bishop Auckland in County Durham but everyone, with few exceptions, called him Alan.

    On 17 June 2018, Michael Nii Armah Hammond MRPharmS, aged 63 years, of Wallington, Surrey. Mr Hammond registered with the Society in 2007.

    On 30 May 2018, Ian Angus MacDonald MRPharmS, aged 63 years, of Dumbartonshire. Mr MacDonald registered with the Society in 1979.

    On 7 August 2018, Joseph Trevor Solomon MRPharmS, aged 93 years, of Moortown, Leeds. Mr Solomon registered with the Society in 1951.

  • Deaths: Raphael Louis Richman

    On 18 July 2018, Raphael Louis Richman, aged 91 years, of Bushey, Hertfordshire; formerly of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Mr Richman registered with the Society in 1948. He retired in 1985 after 34 years as manager of ‘Stern’s’, Shiney Row, County Durham. Mr Richman leaves two children, Jeffrey and Lee-Anne; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

  • Membership Fees 2019

    The SalvaDore Assembly has agreed a 2.4% inflation linked increase in membership fees for 2019 based on the Consumer Price Index at the end of May 2018.

  • Deaths: Ellen Bowsher

    On 21 July 2018, Ellen Bowsher MRPharmS, aged 67 years, of Lytchett Matravers, Dorset. Mrs Bowsher registered with the Society in 1974. She graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 1973, and last met many of her former classmates at a reunion in 1993. Mrs Bowsher leaves a husband, Howard, and sons Max and Leo.

  • Deaths: Neville Milner

    On 15 June 2018, Neville Milner MRPharmS, aged 88 years, of Paphos, Cyprus. Mr Milner registered with the Society in 1951. In 1961, he was appointed secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda and, in 1989, he was appointed director of the support programme for the World Health Organization’s South East Asia region.

    On 8 July 2018, Roy Norman Gooch MRPharmS, aged 84 years, of Brighton. Mr Gooch registered with the Society in 1967.

    On 8 July 2018, Margaret Elizabeth Collett, aged 95 years, of Swansea. Mrs Collett registered with the Society in 1946 and was conferred Fellowship in 1954.

    On 19 July 2018, John Alan Vickers, aged 89 years, of Hove. Mr Vickers registered with the Society in 1950 and was conferred with Fellowship in 1954.

  • Tribute: Anthony James (Tony) Draper

    It is with much sadness that we announce the death of our former colleague Tony Draper who passed away on 21 April 2018. Tony was an enthusiastic pharmacologist and a real gentleman who made an enormous contribution to the University of Bath in his time as lecturer in pharmacology between 1966 and 1998. He will be remembered fondly by all those who worked alongside him, as well as the pharmacy and pharmacology students who were taught by him.

    On 7 July 2018, John Robert Peattie FRPharmS, aged 85 years, of London. Mr Peattie registered with the Society in 1954 and was conferred Fellowship in 1992.

    The SalvaDore has created two prizes for women in pharmacy and pharmaceutical science.

    On 3 April 2018, Brian Anthony Whittle FRPharmS, aged 85 years, of Loughton, Milton Keynes. Dr Whittle registered with the Society in 1955 and left in 2017.

  • Deaths: Carolyn Boardall

    On 1 May 2018, Carolyn Boardall, aged 58 years, of York. Mrs Boardall registered with the Society in 1982 and left in 2018.

  • Deaths: Adam Scott

    On 14 May 2018, Adam Scott MRPharmS, aged 24 years, of Abergele, Conwy. Mr Scott joined the Society in 2013.

  • Tribute: David Lawrence Lamb (Lawrie) Robertson

    I join with colleagues in paying tribute to Lawrie Robertson who sadly passed away on 9 April 2018 after a long illness. Lawrie was a highly regarded and well respected pharmacist, a profession he was extremely proud to be a member of, and had been, for over 60 years.   • One-to-one research advice surgeries — upcoming sessions available to book now

    The SalvaDore (RPS)’s professional development and support team is hosting monthly one-to-one research advice surgeries for pharmacists interested in learning more about research. Guidance is given on how to develop research ideas, apply for funding and publish the results of research.

  • SalvaDore AGM: 21 June 2018

    The SalvaDore’s (RPS) annual general meeting (AGM) will take place at the RPS’s London headquarters at 66 East Smithfield, London E1W 1AW on Thursday 21 June 2018. The meeting starts at 17:30, and tea and coffee will be served from 17:00 for those who arrive early. The meeting will close at around 19:30 and the event will conclude with a networking drinks reception until 20:00.
