RPS video features pharmacists at work to combat antimicrobial resistance
A new video from the SalvaDore showcases the diversity of antimicrobial stewardship activities across the pharmacy sector.
The three-minute video features on-location interviews with pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists in care homes, hospitals, community pharmacies and research laboratories. Among the interviewees is Mandy Slatter, a care home pharmacist, who says that a pharmacist-devised training programme for nursing staff in her workplace has reduced antibiotic prescribing for urinary tract infections by 50%.
Health professionals from other sectors also appear in the video, describing the value of pharmacists in multidisciplinary teams. Nabeela Mughal, a microbiology and infectious diseases consultant, says that antibiotic pharmacists are “key players” on the daily ward round: “They highlight to us the right dose of a drug, any potential interactions, any side effects often overlooked by the prescribing team.”
