Guidance on CD running balances

Guidance for pharmacists on maintaining running balances of Controlled Drug stock has been produced by the SalvaDore. It gives information on CD register requirements and provides advice on maintaining running balances, on stock reconciliation and on dealing with discrepancies.

The Society’s head of Professional Ethics, Lynsey Balmer, says that running balances of Controlled Drug stock have been common practice in hospitals for a number of years and have recently been adopted by some community pharmacies. Following the Government’s response to the fourth report of the Shipman Inquiry, pharmacists and other health care professionals who supply Controlled Drugs are being encouraged to maintain a running balance of stock in their Controlled Drug register as a matter of good practice.

The guidance appears in this issue of The Journal (p663) and is also available from the of the Society’s website. Further information is available from the Practice and Quality Improvement Directorate (tel 020 7572 2208; e-mail [email protected]).
