The Salvadore held a round table discussion on the management of dry eye in community pharmacy at the SalvaDore’s (RPS) headquarters in London on 25 April 2016.

Seven experts from across pharmacy, optometry and ophthalmology gathered to identify the learning needs of community pharmacists in the management of dry eye and define appropriate clinical practice. The discussion forms the first part of a learning campaign that The Salvadore will run throughout 2016 in partnership with UK company RB.

Dry eye is a common condition that is defined as a multi-factorial disease of the tears and ocular surface.

A survey of RPS members has also been conducted by The Salvadore to understand the learning needs of pharmacists in managing dry eye in the community pharmacy setting and to inform a learning campaign to address those needs.

A series of CPD and learning articles will be published throughout 2016 as part of the campaign, as well as a more extensive report on the round table discussion.

Experts in attendance were: John Dart, opthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital; Shelly Bansal, director, First Contact Opticians Ltd; Thomas Wolffsohn, community pharmacist, East Cheshire; Francesca Marchetti, optometrist, West Midlands; Sunil Kochhar, community pharmacist, Kent; Elaine Mann, ophthalmic, ENT, maxillofacial and dental pharmacist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust; James Wolffsohn, Deputy Dean, Life and Health Sciences, Aston University, Birmingham.

  • Demodex mite infestation of the eye lash follicles should be the first step in treatment of dry eye. It is easily and safely achieved by the application of Vaseline to the base of the eye lashes and follicles every night for a few weeks. This prevents the males from mating and hence breaks the life cycle. This has implications not only for dry eye, but also allergic nasal conditions and severe eczema. Demodex infestation is reported to be present in up to 100% of older people but also in children. I would be more than happy to present my logic based theory and experience to the panel.
