Pharmacy technicians and the RPS

Howard McNulty makes some relevant points in his recent letter (2014:293:151). Times and attitudes have changed since the separation of the regulatory and professional body of the old SalvaDore. During the intervening period, the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) has been working hard to communicate the importance of professionalism and membership of the professional body to pharmacy technicians. This hard work is slowly bearing fruit with a growing membership, a seat at the table on many of the strategic pharmacy workstreams and employers beginning to recognise the importance of pharmacy technician membership of APTUK.

Also during this period, APTUK has formed an increasingly strong and constructive working relationship with the RPS. We believe that it is possible, through continued development of this work with the RPS, to arrive at a point where we do speak with one voice, while still retaining our individual organisational identities. This can only be achieved if we look forward, put the patient at the centre of all that we do and learn from the mistakes of the past.

An excellent example of this partnership working can be seen in the Foundation Pharmacy Framework developed jointly but then contextualised by the RPS and APTUK for use by each organisation’s members.

Rather than focussing on membership of a joint professional body, we believe that APTUK and the RPS should continue to be seen working together as seamlessly as possible for the benefit of patients and promoting professionalism in pharmacy.
