FIP 2009: Patients as partners

by Lin-Nam Wang and Pamela Mason

Almost three quarters of patients report they do not have a professional relationship with their pharmacist to manage their medicines. Pharmacists think they show interest in helping patients with their medication, but patients report they do not experience it, said Han de Gier, professor of pharmaceutical care at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, during the 69th World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

He believes that pharmacists and patients need to develop new ways of sharing information in more depth. Patients need to communicate preferences for care more purposefully. Pharmacists need to involve themselves more personally in patients’ lives to learn about their health-relevant lifestyles and beliefs.

Research shows that patients share more information when offered exceptional service and emotional support. This suggests that pharmacists and patients need to build a relationship of mutual trust and respect, he concluded.
